Real cheese isn't processed.

Bland.

That is the word I always heard when someone described English food. They would say the sights are great, weather is ok, and the food is bad. For some people bland, boring food may not be a problem, but for me it was almost a deal breaker.

You see, I really...REALLY enjoy food. I love bold flavors and unique ingredients. The thought of eating cardboard everyday for six weeks was more upsetting to me than my tutorial. The week before I left for Oxford I ate all my favorite meals, said farewell to salt and seasoning and mentally prepared for my personal hell.

I was so wrong!

The food is great here!!! I love everything I've had so far in England. The cafes all use fresh ingredients that taste amazing, which is a nice change from the typical frozen burger. Also, I've seen a great selection foods and rich flavors. In the US I am lucky to see goat cheese (my favorite cheese) on the menu, but it seems like most restaurants in the UK carry an assortment of unique cheeses like goat, feta, brie, you name it. Even pub food has turned out to taste really good.

I would honestly like to see more food like this back in America. We just don’t have the sandwich shops and cafés that Oxford has on every corner. I mean, I love greasy fast food like any American, but why can’t we have Taco Bell and Morton’s? Just a thought.

I completely agree that the food is wonderful here, but the prices definitely reflect that. I find it almost impossible to spend less than 20 US dollars on a good dinner. I love the food here, but it is continuing to empty my pockets.

the Indian food is also very worth trying. I ventured out to place in oxford called Chutney's and it was really great! I had never been to an Indian restaurant but england is for sure the place to give it a first try!

The thing I love best about the restaurants here is how they do not rush you out. The other day Lauren, Allison, Sara and I all lunched at Cafe Puccio for three hours. Granted, it may not have been the "best" use of our time, but its nice to let things settle before rushing onto the road again. Not to mention, the Barcelona panini with goat cheese, smoked ham and olive oil sealed the deal!

Other than the sandwich places, I have not been a fan of the food. I don't even like fish and chips! Well, I like the fish, but not the chips. I hopefully will have better luck the next few weeks, my granola bars are already starting to get old!

If you like good cheese, there's a great selection in a booth in the covered market. I discovered a Stilton cheese with fruit in it (blueberries or cranberries or apricots). Sounds weird, but it's really good on crackers or even as a protein supplement at breakfast.

I was warned about the food, too, before I came here. I thought I would need to buy my own fruits and vegetables and make my own meals! I was so relieved when I enjoyed my first meal here. However, I must say, I enjoy the food in the dining hall more than any pub I've been to. If it were up to me, that's the only place I'd eat. I have had some of the best salmon here! Who would have thought?!

Try the Boots sandwiches. Really! They're fresh & [relatively, or by 2004 & 2005 prices] inexpensive.

Cheers!
