Getting Acquainted with Oxford

Apart from the unfortunate hour-plus wait on the tarmac at Heathrow those of us on the group flight had an uneventful time. The late arrival created by the tarmac wait caused the schedule to tighten once we got to Oxford. But we enjoyed orientation and dinner together. Some of you, I suspect, started exploring Oxford straightaway. I watched a bit of the Spain vs. Germany Euro soccer finals.

This morning our tour guide, Debbie, gave us an overview of how Oxford University works. The video of that description appears with this post. She was a good and enthusiastic tour guide, in my opinion. Sorry the sound is a bit off.

Tonight we have our first High Table and classes begin tomorrow. Ours meets from 9 to 11 a.m.

I'm enjoying very much reading the blog. I'm also learning a lot that will be very helpful to me when I take the 2009 Grady group to Oxford. Keep learning and keep enjoying! I'll do the same from Athens!

Dr. A, of course, plans a two-hour stint on the tarmac just to outdo Dr. Reber.

Favorite Oxford haunts: High Table, Eagle & Child Pub, the pub outside and to the left of Trinity (forget the name), Taming of the Shrew on the lawn one evening at one of the colleges, people-watching on Cornmarket, wandering town and catching a pint at random pubs.

Did I mention pubs?

Oh, I highly recommend the walk I believe Kalpen mentions to the old abbey. You cross the Thames, walk along it until you visit one pub (The Perch, I think) and walk along again by the locks, past the abbey (which is neat) and then to The Trout (yeah, another pub, seeing a trend here?). Great walk.
